TEACHING PERSPECTIVES INVENTORY (TPI)
Teaching
Perspectives Inventory (TPI) is a result of a research carried out for decades
in Canada, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, and United States. It is an itemized inventory
that will assess once own teaching. Five main perspectives are
derived from
this research which were named as transmission, apprenticeship,
developmental, nurturing, and social reform. These perspectives
are assessed in terms of Beliefs, Intentions, and Actions.

It is an online and automatic assessment of a particular teacher’s teaching philosophy
in a given context for a selected level of students.
The TPI
helps teachers to self-evaluate their own teaching and therefore enhances Professional
Development.
INTERPRETATION OF MY OWN TPI SCORE
The result
of my own TPI profile sheet reveals that I am dominant in two perspectives
which are nurturing and social reform. According to the graph, the TPI score of
apprenticeship was at below the lower line which indicates that it was
recessive for me. The remaining two perspectives (Transmission, and Developmental)
are at mean level of 38. It further reveals that my Beliefs, Intentions,
and Actions on social reform was at same level (13). The graph also
reveals that my beliefs about teaching and learning is more in transmission and
nurturing students, but intentions and actions are more in the remaining
perspectives.
When
reflecting to the above results, it indicates that my teaching objectives are
highly based on collective societal values and disciplines. I focus more on
applying learnt knowledge to real life. I encourage students to feel more
confident and esteemed. They should have the courage to feel and face the
challenges of the 21st century in political and socioeconomic environments.
According
to the TPI score I was recessive in apprenticeship which indicates that I need
to improve my teaching on this perspective. I should be a highly skilled practitioner
of what I teach. I hope I can improve this perspective and re-do this
assessment after some time.
Finally,
after interpretation of my own TPI, I could say that I am a dominant social
reformer who is good at nurturing students in the teaching subject. These two
perspectives are very important aspects of effective teaching.
